Mechanical manual wind wrist watches are driven by a mainspring which needs to be wound, usually every day. There are some eight day variations.

Automatic or self-winding wrist watches are wound automatically by the motions of the wrist. When fully wound, they build up a power reserve of approximately forty hours.

Modern quartz wrist watches are powered by a battery.
